A Personal Note from Me: Master the Vibe, Not Just the Notes!!!
My fellow musicians!
When I first got introduced to these incredible scales by my friend Ilan Smilan while playing in Hoodna Orchestra, my mind was completely blown.
But here is the most important truth about Ethiopian music: technical practice is only half the picture.
Ethiopia is a vast country with incredible cultural diversity, where different regions developed their own unique melodies, variations, and folklore traditions. Because of this rich history, you will often find different musicians and regions interpreting these pentatonic scales in slightly different ways.
The scales and exercises presented in this book represent my own curated choices, shaped by deep study with master musicians, academic sources, and years of personal experience playing and recording this music.
Traditional Ethiopian music relies heavily on feel, micro-nuances, and phrasing that you just can't get from paper alone. To truly internalize these sounds and play them with genuine vibe, you have to submerge your ears in the real thing.
Before, during, and after practicing the exercises in this book,
Go listen to the masters!!!
-
Mulatu Astatke – The godfather of Ethio-Jazz.
-
Mahmoud Ahmed & Tilahun Gessesse – The legendary voices of the Golden Age.
-
Getatchew Mekurya – A true titan on the saxophone.
Want to hear how these scales blend into a modern, raw context? Check out Hoodna Orchestra (the band I play with). You can hear how we take these traditional pentatonic structures and fuse them with heavy grooves, gritty rock, and contemporary Afrobeat energy.
Put on the classic Éthiopiques collection and some Hoodna tracks on Spotify or Apple Music, sing along with the notes, feel the groove, and then hit the horn. Combine active listening with these 4 exercises across all 12 keys, and you will unlock a whole new musical language.
Let's make some music!
